Christopher Nails
PASS 100
at Thompson

Ted Christopher won a hard-fought battle in Saturday nights’ PASS 100 at Thompson International Speedway to add a Pro All Stars Series victory to an already remarkable racing resume. Christopher put Clinton Teague’s’ North East Recycling Chevrolet out front for good on a lap ninety restart after a torrid battle with Rick Martin for the race lead. Martin was forced to pit with a deflating tire but the veteran battled back in the race’s final laps to bring his familiar G. Lopes Construction ride home in third.

Sandwiched between the two Thompson aces in second was Ben Rowe, who had to roll out his back-up car after a hard practice crash sidelined his primary Mechanical Services racer. Rowe had to race his way back through the field on two occasions to score the runner up finish.

Larry Gelinas came back from an early race altercation to claim fourth and current PASS point leader Johnny Clark rounded out the top five. Clark had an engine go sour in practice and the DNK Select/Clarks Cars and Parts team had to make an engine swap prior to time trials. If the mechanical problem had surfaced in the feature Clark’s PASS championship aspirations could easily have taken a turn for the worst.

Thompson regular Norm Wren persevered for a solid sixth place finish and Tracy Gordon overcame an unusual thirty-third starting spot to claim seventh. Gordon experienced driveline problems in time trials that ruined his qualifying run and relegated him to the rear of the grid. Eighth went to Jarrod Robbie with Bobby Cabral and Chuck Docherty rounding out the unofficial top ten.

In Sunoco Race Fuel Time Trials Cassius Clark topped the thirty four car field with a blistering 19.731-second trip around Thompson’s high banks, edging Scott Mullkern for the honors.

C. Clark started the one hundred green flag lap feature in sixth by way of his finish in the Dash race but quickly worked his way toward the front, taking the lead from Rick Martin on lap twelve. The Farmington Maine racer battled back and forth with Martin over the course of several restarts in the race’s early stages but an oil line problem sent Clark to pit road while leading under caution on lap thirty six. Clark’s night ended after a massive front stretch wreck that involved nearly half the field and sidelined Clark, GeGe Gravel and Garry Johnson, and slowed many others.

Christopher was now at the point with Martin in pursuit and the pair put on a battle royal for the fans with Martin taking control on lap fifty five and building a slight advantage over Christopher as the laps wound down. But when the green flew on the lap ninety restart Martin couldn’t pick up the throttle and Christopher took over the lead once again. Despite Rowe’s all out effort to challenge Christopher, the journeyman racer added yet another win to his long list of racing achievements.

Larry Gelinas earned the Pole Dash win while Mike Rowe and Dick Houlihan captured heat race victories. Todd Patnode was the Northern Race Tires Rookie of the Race, finishing in fifteenth.

The Pro All Stars Series returns to action at White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday night July 24th at 6:00 PM. Race fans can enter the PASS/Cumberland Farms “You Pick the Race” contest by stopping by one of ninety Cumberland Farms stores in Maine and New Hampshire for an entry blank.
