Scores Rich PASS DNK Select 250 Win
Johnny Clark’s late race pit stop proved to be the right move at the right time in
Sunday’s Pro All Stars Series DNK Select 250. The Farmingdale Maine racer restarted
on the tail end of the lead lap and quickly overpowered the field for the victory in
Sunday’s DNK Select 250 before a packed house at Unity (ME) Raceway. The win was
Clark’s third PASS career win and second in a row for the driver of the DNK Select
250/Clark’s Cars and Parts/Autodealer Magazine Chevrolet. Clark earned $25,000.00 for
the victory in his sponsor’s race and extended his Pro All Stars Series point lead
over second place finisher and defending series champion Ben Rowe. Clark’s margin of
victory was .546 seconds. Mike Rowe edged Bangor’s Gary Smith at the line to come
home third with Smith, Tracy Gordon, Travis Kheil, Andy Santerre, Gary Drew, Ricky Rolfe
and Unity regular Matt Lee completing the top ten. The $150,000.00 purse attracted seventy
Pro Stock racers from four states and four Canadian provinces for a shot at the thirty
four car starting field.
The race ran in two 125-lap green flag segments with a ten minute break at the halfway
mark. The first half saw the caution flag fly on numerous occasions and many of the pre
race favorites fell by the wayside. Ralph Nason, Ted Christopher, Jeff Taylor, Scott
Mulkern and Cassius Clark were among those eliminated early on. Gary Drew, Johnny Clark,
Ben Rowe and Scott Chubbuck all had a turn at the front of the field with Chubbuck in the
lead when the yellow flew at the half-way mark. Travis Kheil held down the second position
with Clark third, Richie Dearborn fourth and Mike Rowe Fifth. Matt Lee was sixth in the
order with Larry Gelinas Ricky Rolfe, Patrick Leperle and Andy Shaw rounding out the top
ten.
Travis Kheil got the measure of Chubbuck on the lap 126 restart and held the top spot for
an extended green flag run, keeping now second place runner Clark behind him despite
several challenges. It looked like the 2003 PASS/Northern Race Tires Rookie of the Year
might be on his way to his first series victory but a restart just past the 200 lap mark
saw Mike Rowe wrestle the lead away from Kheil. Kheil came back to challenge Rowe but the
pair came together and bobbled, allowing Ben Rowe to shoot by them both for the race lead.
Meanwhile, Johnny Clark had faded just a bit and he made the call to pit for a sway bar
adjustment, returning on the tail end of the lead lap. Clark had the hot hand now and he
wasted little time powering through the field to make the winning move under Ben Rowe for
the biggest win of his young racing career.
Gary Drew, Ted Christopher, Johnny Clark, Rick Martin, Ben Rowe and Matt Lee were
victorious in the six qualifying heats and Stan Meserve, Gary Smith, Larry Gelinas and
Jeff Burgess each earned consolation round wins. Donnie Whitten was the PASS/Northern Race
Tires Rookie of the Race.
The Pro All Stars Series returns to action on Saturday June 26th when the series makes its
first stop of the season at Scotia Speedworld for the Forbes Chev Olds 200. For more
