Johnny Clark Wins PASS Atlantic CAT 250

Pro All Stars Series point leader Johnny Clark bided his time near the front of the Atlantic CAT 250 field all race long, and when Ben Rowe and John Flemming tangled in a battle for the lead on lap 217 he took over the top spot and never looked back to score the victory at Halifax Nova Scotia’s Scotia Speedworld on Saturday August 14th. Clark was followed to the line by Mike Rowe who persevered for second and Walt Hammond with his best ever PASS finish in third. Ben Rowe battled back in the closing laps to capture the fourth spot with Travis Kheil fifth and Cassius Clark sixth. Wayne Smith lead the Canadian contingent in seventh with maritime Pro Stock newcomer Shawn Turple in the car numbered “SFR” (for Scott Fraser Racing) eighth, Flemming ninth and PASS/Northern Race Tires rookie of the race Donnie Whitten tenth.

The race played before a capacity crowd and fans were treated to an event that saw fourteen lead changes amongst nine different drivers as nearly $5,000.00 (CD) in lap money kept the battle up front exciting.

Cassius Clark led the way in time trials with a lap of 13.805 seconds around the flat d-shaped 3-10th mile oval, beating out Ben Rowe (13.888) for fast time honors. Johnny Clark was close behind with a 13.937 second clocking, followed by Dave Gorveatt (13.948) Mike MacKenzie (13.965) Jeff Taylor (14.005) and Gary Smith (14.032). Phil Barkhouse Jr. (14.057), Shawn Turple and Mike Rowe rounded out the fast ten.

Mike MacKenzie drew the number one spot in the dash redraw and took the dash checkers first to earn the pole position with Phill Barkhouse Jr. along side for an all Maritime front row. Dave Gorveatt lined up third with Jeff Taylor to his outside and Johnny Clark would start from the fifth position. Cassius Clark, Turple, Ben Rowe, Mike Rowe and Gary Smith completed the top ten with heat race winners Wayne Smith and Lonnie Summerville next.

At the drop of the green Barkhouse lead briefly before giving way to Dave Gorveatt (laps 5-32) who yielded to Cassius Clark on lap 33. Clark lost the lead after contact with Ben Rowe sent him spinning and Rowe went to the tail end of the lineup. Marty Prevost was next to lead and he controlled the point for 29 laps, then Larry Gelinas took over for four before Prevost reassumed the lead from laps 78 to 102 . A blown engine ended a very strong run for Prevost’s Lincoln Fisheries Monte Carlo. Gelinas, Gary Smith and Gorveatt all took turns at the top as pit strategy played out. Gorveatt’s hopes for a second PASS win were dashed when his shifter broke on a restart, sending the veteran PEI racer into the wall after contact from behind. As the laps counted down it was John Flemming and Rowe staging yet another one of their classic battles with Flemming out front from laps 156 to 214 before giving way to Rowe in a side by side duel. Rowe’s lead was short-lived though as the pair made contact, causing a synchronized spin on lap 217. Rowe took an unavoidable shot from Gary Smith that ended Smith’s day. Johnny Clark’s patience and consistency over the 250 lap grind were rewarded with the lead, the hard racing up front opening the door to his fourth Pro All Stars Series victory of 2004 and a $6,000.00 –plus payday.
