Ben Rowe Victor
at Canaan Fair Speedway
Turner Maines Ben Rowe took advantage of a timely restart near the midpoint of
Sundays PASS 150 at Canaan (NH) Fair Speedway to snatch the lead away from Richie
Dearborn and motor away to his third Pro All Stars Series win of 2004. Dearborn had a
great run that ended with a second place finish while current PASS point leader Johnny
Clark took home third place honors. Cassius Clark was a contender all day and settled for
fourth at the checkers and Mike Rowe rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth place
at the finish were Travis Kheil, Sam Sessions, Bobby Cabral, Gege Gravel and Donnie
Whitten.
Johnny Clark topped twenty-five other racers in Sunoco Race Fuel time trials with a lap of
14.005 seconds, edging out Sam Sessions (14.029) and Ben Rowe (14.070) for the honors.
Gege Gravel (14.152) Cassius Clark (14.155) Larry Gelinas (14.175) Mike Rowe (14.176),
Gary Smith (14.200), Richie Dearborn (14.210) and Walt Hammond (14.222) completed the fast
ten for the Pole Dash. Johnny Clarks luck stood up for the redraw, drawing the pole
position and winning the dash to sit on the pole. Gelinas came home in second with
Dearborn third, Gravel fourth, Smith fifth, Mike Rowe sixth, Cassius Clark seventh,
Sessions eighth, Ben Rowe ninth and Walt Hammond completing the top ten starters.
Clark jumped out front when the feature took the green and looked like he might be able to
duplicate his Canaan win earlier in the season, but it soon become clear that hed be
challenged this time around. Larry Gelinas ran side by side on an early race restart and
claimed the lead for one lap before settling for second. The early chargers were Dearborn
and Cassius Clark, The pair were on rails in the first half of the race with Dearborn by
J. Clark for the lead and C. Clark quickly by J. Clark for second as Gelinas slid back,
eventually parking the Watts Race Cars entry with mechanical problems.
The front three were setting a fast pace, pulling out to a half track lead over Mike Rowe,
Ben Rowe and Sam Sessions during a long green flag run. But a lap 67 caution brought the
top three back to the field and Ben Rowe knew it was time to try and make his move. Johnny
Clark took advantage of his inside spot to claim second from Cassius Clark, and Ben Rowe
jumped up to third then under Johnny Clark for second, just as the red flag flew for Gary
Smiths wild flip off the front stretch wall and down over turn one.. Smith walked
away from the spectacular crash and when the field rolled again Rowe was next to leader
Dearborn on the grid. Rowe motored around Dearborn for the lead at lap 75 and Dearborn
looked to be in trouble when both J. Clark and C. Clark went by for second and third
respectively. Dearborn battled back to reclaim the second spot but didnt have enough
to catch the 2002-2003 PASS champ, who claimed his third PASS victory of 2004 by a margin
of .824 seconds.
Heat race wins went Eric Hudson and Bobby Cabral. Donnie Whitten earned the PASS/Northern
Race Tires Rookie of the Race award for his tenth place finish.
