Richie Dearborn Wins

Hollis Maine’s Richie Dearborn made an outside move around race leader Wayne Helliwell Jr. on lap 107 of Sunday’s Pro All Stars Series AutoDealer Magaizine.com 150 and raced away from the field to score his first Pro All Stars Series feature win. In a race that was short on cautions and long on great racing action, the 2001 PASS/Northern Race tires Rookie of the Year drove his Chadwick BaRoss/Dayton Sand and Gravel Chevrolet to a solid victory, beating Tracy Gordon by 1.256 seconds at the checkers.

PASS point leader Johnny Clark extended his lead with a third place finish, with Larry Gelinas (behind the wheel of his own Digby’s Variety mount) fourth and Mike Rowe fifth. Walt Hammond, Cassius Clark, Ben Rowe, Wayne Helliwell Jr. and Dave Gorveatt completed the top ten.

Dearborn is the seventh different PASS winner in 2004 and the nineteenth driver to score a Pro All Stars Series feature win.

Ben Rowe topped a field of thirty-four PASS racers in Sunoco Race Fuel time trials with a lap of 15.168 seconds, edging Johnny Clark (15.204) for the honors. Travis Kheil pulled the number one spot for the Dash redraw and won the twelve lap sprint for the “fast ten”, putting him on the pole for the feature. The first five rows were set with Kheil and Wayne Helliwell Jr. in row one, Ben Rowe and Sam Sessions in row two, Gordon and Dearborn in row three, Johnny Clark and GeGe Gravel in row four and Gelinas and Eric Hudson lining up in row five.

Helliwell grabbed the lead at the initial green and drove away from the pack, opening up a half-straightaway lead on Kheil, Ben Rowe, Sessions, Gordon and Clark. The former Lee regular had his way with the field in the early going and maintained his lead on several restarts, including one for a wreck that ended San Sessions and Scott Watt’s day. At lap fifty Ben Rowe had worked his way up to second with Gordon, Kheil and Dearborn in tow, but the 00 looked to be slightly off the pace. Dearborn began to make his move near the halfway point, getting under both Gordon and Rowe to ride second as he chased down leader Helliwell.

Meanwhile, both Rowe and Kheil took advantage of a lap 97 caution to pit in an attempt to improve their race cars. Helliwell kept Dearborn in his mirror for the next thirty laps, but on lap 106 Dearborn set his Dearborn Racing Chevy to the outside groove and battled door to door with Helliwell, taking the lead away a lap later. Helliwell eventually surrendered a number of spots to the field after leading over two thirds of the race, settling for ninth at the checkers. Dearborn had four past Pro All Stars winners in his mirror at the finish as he added his own name to the elite list.

Heat race wins went to Cassius Clark, Scott Watts and JR Baril; Louie Mechalides came out on top in the consolation round. Chris Ross made his long haul from Malta New York worthwhile, earning the PASS/Northern Race Tires rookie of the race award for his twelfth place run.

The PASS modifieds were in action at Lee and Stetson Maine’s Wayne Allard #15 took down the checkers over Greg Venoite #07 and Jason Taylor #8. (Steve Reno was DQ'd after tech.)
