Cassius Clark Goes
Three in a Row With Canaan Victory NAPLES, ME (May 29, 2006) Second-generation driver Cassius Clark continued his perfect win streak in Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North competition in 2006 by pulling into winners circle at Canaan Fair Speedway (NH) on Saturday night. The Farmington, ME driver quickly worked his way from the 11th starting position into the top five during the 150-lap main event, and passed leaders Johnny Clark and Patrick Laperle just before both were eliminated from contention at lap 139. Former PASS Champion Johnny Clark, who had led all but six laps to the point of his demise, suffered damage from a broken rear brake rotor while out front. Debris from the brake rotor damaged Clarks rear wheel hub and then bounced into Laperles car, cutting Laperles brake line off his brake master cylinder. As PASS officials threw the caution flag to clean up leaking fluid from both cars, Laperle retired to the pit area, while Clark attempted the restart but pulled off immediately after the green. At the restart, Cassius Clark held off the challenges of Rick Martin and Richie Dearborn to capture his third PASS North victory in three events, the seventh win of his career. Despite having to add extra weight to his EJP, Inc./PEP Transportation Ford while utilizing an optional two-barrel carburetor engine, Clark has been untouchable in 2006. No driver had previously swept the first three events of any PASS season, and a fourth-straight win would be an all-time PASS record for consecutive victories. Were going pretty good right now, but tonight was pretty tough, thats for sure, Cassius said following the victory. We had a good car, but on the restarts the four-barrel cars were really killing us on the straightaways. The extra weight definitely took something away from us, but once we got going I started gaining on Johnny and Patrick a little bit. Johnny had trouble at the end and it took Patrick out too, so I guess it just worked out for us tonight. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. Like most drivers in the field, multi-time Seekonk Speedway (MA) Champion Rick Martin of Taunton, MA benefited from the problems that took Johnny Clark and Patrick Laperle out of the picture. Martin had been the only driver to edge in front of Johnny Clark for the lead during the races early lap, but had fallen back as far as fifth place before the lap 139 caution. Martin surged into second place on the restart, and held on to his G. Lopes Construction Chevrolet over Richie Dearborn of Hollis, ME to take runner-up honors. Dearborns crew worked until moments before the start of the 150-lap event, and got the Chadwick-BaRoss Chevrolet out of the pits in time to start 20th dead last on the field. Dearborn methodically moved his way through the field to take his best finish of the season in third place. Scott Chubbuck of Wiscasset, ME took his third top-five finish of the season in fourth place, while Mike Rowe of Turner, ME charged from 15th to finish fifth over the final 40 laps. Alan Wilson, Ben Rowe, Corey Williams, Gary Smith, and Travis Benjamin rounded out the Top 10 in order. Rookie Alan Tardiff and Johnny Clark were qualifying heat winners. The PASS North Super Late Model Series heads to Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH on Sunday, June 4 for a 150-lap event. Johnny Clark and Rick Martin each earned victories at the fast, high-banked 1/4-mile bullring in 2005. |
