Rowe, Fraser Top PASS Maritime Doubleheader

It was the Ben Rowe show Friday the 4th in the Pro All Stars Series Forbes Chev-Olds 200 at Scotia Speedworld. Rowe set the mark early with fast time in Sunoco Race Fuels time trials and then went on to lead 155 of the 200 laps of the PASS feature to capture his fourth win of 2003 for the Tom and Eileen Estes owned Mechanical Services/Superior Image team.
Larry Gelinas was second in the Watts Enterprises/Digby’s Variety Chevrolet and Scott Mulkern came home third in his Community Pharmacies Dodge. Shubencadie, Nova Scotia racer Scott Fraser was the top finishing Canadian driver in fourth and Mike Rowe rounded out the top five. Dale Shaw claimed the sixth spot with Donald Chisolm, John Flemming, Sam Sessions and Mike MacKenzie completing the top ten. Travis Kheil earned the Northern Race Tires Rookie Challenge award for his eleventh place run.

Fast Car Dash winner Mulkern led the first thirty-two circuits before being overtaken by Ben Rowe. Rowe led until lap seventy when Gelinas grabbed the top spot for thirteen laps. Rowe made his last pass for the top spot on lap eighty-four and went on to lead the final 116 laps to capture the victory. The race took just 59 minutes to complete and saw only two cautions for minor incidents. Twenty-one cars finished the event.
Heat race winners among the 24 entries were Mike Rowe and Wayne Smith.

The PASS teams loaded up and headed south to New Brunswick International Speedway for a 150 lapper on Saturday night that saw just one lap 20 caution spoil a potential green to checker run. Shubencadie Nova Scotia’s Scott Fraser held up the honors for the Canadian teams, earning his first Pro All Stars win of 2003 in his Fraser Racing/ King Freight Lines Chevrolet. Fraser battled Friday’s Scotia Speedworld Forbes Chev-Olds 200 winner Ben Rowe for the distance, besting the PASS point leader by .362 seconds at the stripe.

Johnny Clark, Larry Gelinas and Scott Chubbuck waged a fierce battle for third throughout the event with Clark coming out on top of that tussle for third with Gelinas fourth and Chubbuck fifth. Scott Mulkern backed up his third place run on Friday with a solid sixth and Dave Groveatt came back to score seventh after a disappointing 22nd place finish at Scotia. Travis Kheil was the top Northern Race Tires Rookie in eighth with Nova Scotian John Flemming ninth and Dale Shaw tenth.

Twenty-one of the twenty-three starters completed the distance, taking just thirty-eight minutes to make the run from green to the checkers. Moncton, New Brunswick’s Dave O’Blennis set the fastest race lap at 13.443.

Ben Rowe earned the Sunoco Race Fuels fast time with a lap of 13.208 seconds.
