AUSTIN THERIAULT SCORES
SOUTHERN MAINE MOTORS 300
SLM VICTORY AT BEECH RIDGE
A gorgeous late summer day greeted race fans at the beautiful Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine on Sunday, and they were treated to some great racing in all three PASS divisions that participated on the final day of the event.

Young Austin Theriault carried the checkered flag in the 300 lap Super Late Model event, but it was a challenge from the start as he led for the first four laps before outside pole sitter, Corey Bubar took over until a lap 90 restart for a minor spin by Kyle Desouza. At this point racing became intense as some of the top cars were starting to make their way through traffic and were headed to the front. Theriault got the jump on the restart, and Kelly Moore erupted from the fourth spot, and jumped to the second spot at the green. Travis Benjamin also slipped by Bubar, and Michael Landry worked Bubar’s inside for fifth. While Theriault led the race, Bubar battled his way back into the second spot before the caution flew once again for a minor spin in turn two. Suddenly, Travis Benjamin headed to the pits, the hood went up, and apparent mechanical problems eliminated the 2013 TD Bank 250 from any more action.

As the race continued, Theriault fought off all comers including DJ Shaw, Bubar, Kelly Moore, Johnny Clark and Cassius Clark. Around lap 225 Mike Rowe muscled his way into the top five and looked to be a contender until lapped traffic slowed his progress and the leaders slipped away. A Bryan Kruczek spin on lap 288 set up a mad dash to the finish, as Theriault, Shaw, Bubar, Cassius Clark, Derek Ranstrom and Mike Rowe filled the top three rows. When the green dropped Theriault got the jump, but Ranstrom dove underneath Shaw for second, and then pulled up to the door of the leader with nine laps to go. Ranstrom couldn’t make the pass on the leader, and Shaw slipped back by for the second spot. At this point Theriault opened up a five car length advantage and cruised to the victory. Shaw held on for second, Ranstrom third, Bubar fourth and Cassius Clark rounded out the top five. Positions sixth through ten included Kelly Moore, Mike Rowe, David Oliver, Scott Mulkern and Tony Ricci.

The PASS Mods were once again out in force and young newcomer Gary Thorne lead the first twenty-four laps before Mark Lucas weaved his way through traffic and into the lead. Lucas brought Scott Alexander and Mitch Miller with him setting up a dandy of a finish. While Lucas was at the point, Miller battled his way by Alexander and then set his sights on the leader. As the white flag waved, Miller pulled to the outside lane to challenge for the win but ran out of real estate as the checkers flew. Lucas collected the win and extended his points lead heading into the final at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday, September 28th. Miller settled for second ahead of Alexander, Travis Buzzell and Mark Lundbland Jr..

The PASS Sportsman ran a 100 lap race that saw Joe Pastore score another impressive win as he dominated the show, defeating Rusty Poland, Carey Martin whom edged out Clyde Hennessey in a photo finish for the third spot. Ricky Burgess completed the top five.

The PASS North championships will be decided in all divisions at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday, September 28th. Post time is 1pm.

Phillips, Smith Score Saturday Victories on 400 Weekend at Beech Ridge
Austin Theriault Earns Pole for
Super Late Model 300 Sunday
Scarborough, Maine – Ryan Phillips of Buxton, Maine scored a career-first PASS Modified victory, while Gorham’s Craig Smith prevailed in a 75-lap open event for Wildcat/Strictly Stock division racers, topping the feature racing card to kick off Southern Maine Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge 400 weekend at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.

Austin Theriault of Fort Kent will start from the pole in Sunday’s Pro All Stars series Super Late Model 300 after winning his qualifying heat race on Saturday. DJ Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire and Corey Bubar of Windham also won heat races to set the 30-car starting field for Sunday’s main event.

Other feature races were held for the mid-week series racers after their originally-scheduled Thursday night event was washed out. Matt Dufault of Turner, Alex Lacognata of Scarborough, Chad Emery of Buxton, Jeff walker of Waterboro and Freeport’s Matt Curtis were triumphant in those events.

PASS Modified winner Phillips, a former champion of the Roadrunner division at Beech Ridge, earned his first trip to victory lane since moving into the touring series class in impressive fashion. Phillips started eighth and worked his way toward the front of the pack, outbattling veteran racer Ron Henry of New Gloucester to take a lead he would not relinquish.

PASS Mod championship contender Scott Alexander climbed all the way from 15th on the starting grid to chase Phillips under the checkered flag, with Mark Lundblad of Conway, New Hampshire posting a third-place finish. Henry finished fourth after leading most of the race, with former champion Mark Lucas of Harpswell rounding out the top five.

For Craig Smith the first time was the charm, as the PASS Sportsman series regular unveiled a new mount and drove it into victory lane following its’ maiden voyage. It was no easy feat as Lewis Anderson – the championship runner-up in the class at Beech Ridge this season – started dead last in the 31-car field and almost found a way by Smith on a late restart before settling for runner-up honors.

Ryan Hewins of Leeds hopped a ride in Dave Whittier’s 58 and bounced back from a heat race crash to challenge for the win before crossing the line in third position. Lewiston’s Corey Morgan led several laps before fading to a fourth-place finish in front of Buxton’s Brian Caswell.

Matt Dufault of Turner dominated the 50-lap main event for the 350 V-8 stock mid-week racers, winning by a healthy margin. Chris Burgess of Buckfield prevailed in a tight balle for runner-up honors with Josh Childs of Oxford. Early race leader Corey Morgan of Lewiston and Billy Childs, Jr., of Leeds rounded out the top-five.

Alex Lacognata of Scarborough likewise romped to an impressive victory in the 35-lapper for 305 V-8 stock mid-week racers. Bill Gibson of Standish and Gorham’s Johnny Wolfe shared the podium with Lacognata. Chad Reynolds of Limington and Alfred’s Chris Letourneau posted fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

Chad Emery of Buxton cruised to victory in a 35-lap race for four-cylinder pick-up trucks. Matt Curtis of Freeport made a late charge into second position, with Portland’s Jeff Gilette claiming third-place hardware.

Jeff Walker of Waterboro powered his way to victory lane following the 35-lap four-cylinder mid-week special. David Stone, Jr. of Sanford used a late-race restart to make it look close, while Nate Dubuc of Lewiston filling out the podium.

Wildcat feature winner Smith goes for a weekend double in the Sportsman 100 on Sunday after winning a heat race to earn a front row starting spot. Other Sportsman heat winners were Matt Dow and Joey Pastore.

PASS IRONMEN ALWAYS RISE to the TOP
at
BEECH RIDGE PASS 400 WEEKEND
The old saying that the cream always rises to the top certainly is an accurate statement for the PASS 400 Weekend at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine. September 15th marks the 9th anniversary of the event at one of Maine’s premiere facilities, located just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean seacoast. When you think of Maine, you think of lobster and fresh seafood. When you think of auto racing in Maine, you think of the TD Bank 250 at Oxford, and the PASS 400 Weekend at Beech Ridge. When the checker falls this Sunday, will it be an Ironman veteran, or and up and coming young racer sitting in victory lane?

History has had a way of repeating itself over the first eight years of the event. Mike Rowe captured the inaugural Pullen Industries 300 back in 2005. Mike’s son Ben took his place in the history books by capturing the 2006 edition. Not to be outdone, Papa Mike returned to victory lane in 2007 to claim his second win in the prestigious event. Johnny Clark broke the Rowe family streak in 2008, but Mike Rowe nipped DJ Shaw at the line by inches to claim his third 400 Weekend victory in 2009. Johnny Clark then won the next two 400 Weekends in 2010 and 2011 before Ben Rowe edged out Joey Doiron after Doiron lost valuable time in the races final pit stop after pretty much dominating the show in 2012.

Now comes the ninth 400 Weekend scheduled for Thursday through Sunday, September 12th through the 15th. Red hot Joey Doiron will bring his team to the battleground called Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, to see if he can unseat the Rowe / Clark stronghold on the event. Doiron will lead a large contingent of starry eyed youngsters to the battle including the likes of Cassius Clark, DJ Shaw, Derek Ranstrom, David Oliver, and the defending PASS champion and 2013 TD Bank 250 winner, Travis Benjamin. Both Johnny Clark and Ben Rowe have struggled on the PASS. Tour this season, while Mike Rowe has been victorious in 2013 at Beech Ridge. They may be struggling but this event always has a way to bring the cream back to the top. The big question to be answered late Sunday afternoon is, will history repeat itself, or will a new “Top Gun” wear the crown? Be there to see the war yourself!
