SHAW STARTS STRONG
Thompson, CT- Five-time Pro All Stars Series North Champion DJ Shaw #60 walked away with the win after a dominating performance at The Icebreaker. DJ kicked off his bid for his sixth PASS North Championship by opening up a 7 point margin over the next closest competitor. This marks DJ's third victory at Thompson in the last five PASS races and ties him with Derek Griffith and Ben Rowe for the most all time.

24 cars came to Thompson with high hopes but Kulwicki Driver Developments Program Finalist Kate Re's weekend ended early on Friday during practice after a steering issue caused her to make hard contact with the turn one wall for the second straight year. With the #10 car needing a clip, the team loaded up and went home early. Canadian JP Jossiase #24J fell out of his heat race after mechanical problems relegating him to a DNS (did not start) as well.

The other 22 cars had their lineups determined by two ten lap heat races. The first of which was won by Joey Pole. Joey's No. #4NH was unable to make frame height after the heat in technical inspection and was disqualified. Joey would have to start from the rear of the field. That handed the Pole position to seven-time PASS North Champion Johnny Clark#54. Garrett Hall #94 won the second heat and lined up in the second spot for the main event.

The first half of the Icebreaker 75 rattled off quickly and quietly. Austin Teras #29retired from the even on lap 22 with motor issues as Johnny Clark led over DJ Shaw until lap 40. As DJ looked to the inside of Clark the leaders started to catch lapped traffic. DJ skillfully was able to use the #81 of Dan Winter as a pick and take over the top spot.

As the lead changed hands battles we're picking up all over the track. Gabe Brown #50, Jake "The Jet" Johnson #15MA, Eddie MacDonald #17MA and Austin MacDonald #13 were battling hard for the third position. Joey Pole had worked his way into a three car battle for the tenth spot with Brandon Barker #88 and Garrett Hall who had been dropping positions steadily.

Lap 48 would produce the one and only caution in the event. Austin MacDonald had a failure in the RF of his machine and made hard contact into the turn 1 wall. No other vehicles were involved but the wreck effectively killed his car and his stat of never finishing outside of the top ten in a PASS event.

When the field restarted it became all DJ Shaw as he rolled the bottom past Clark. Jake "The Jet" Johnson followed Shaw through the bottom while Clark started to fall to the back.

Joey Pole took full advantage of the restart and moved all the way up to fourth by the 56th circuit around the 5/8 mile. Joey would end up giving up the 4th spot to Gabe Brown on the final lap of the event. As the duo followed Shaw, Johnson and "The Outlaw" Eddie MacDonald across the finish line.

Eddie Mac extends his streak of podium finishes to four straight at Thompson and has to be excited about his chances going into the next PASS race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on April 16th. The Outlaw has 11 career wins at the magic mile throughout multiple divisions and is just one behind Kyle Busch for the most all time.

Defending Northeast Classic winner Johnny Clark looks to defend the crown while Thompson's Winner D.J. Shaw looks to capture his first Magic Mile Victory in his 13th attempt.

1st Thompson Wins for Chapman &
Moore with Fanning and Gluchacki

Also Grabbing Gold
Thompson, CT -- The famous American author Mark Twain once said, "If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes." If anyone ever needed concrete evidence of that quotation, they should've been standing in Thompson, Connecticut on Saturday, April 9th. After on-again, off-again rain showers, the crew at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park were able to prepare the racing surface for one of New England's biggest Tour-type Modified events; the Icebreaker 125.

Utilizing the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) 'Plus/Minus' qualifying system, the Icebreaker 125 was led to green by Connecticut Modified master Todd Owen with a plus-six beside young Matt Swanson, who earned a solid plus-five in his respective heat. Swanson quickly charged to the lead on lap 4 with Jon McKennedy, Eric Goodale and Teddy Hodgdon fighting for 3rd through 5th on the field. The first caution took place on lap 17 with, ironically, the #17 of Kevin Folan going for a spin in the middle of turns three and four.

Following the restart, Goodale stalked Swanson before jumping into the lead on lap 24 with McKennedy following close behind and around the early leader for 2nd. This trio flew around the Thompson 5/8-mile until David Arute slammed into the turn-one wall on lap 40, stacking the field for a fierce restart between Goodale and McKennedy. The #79 would lead until Ronnie Williams, after a strong day and a 3rd place starting position, slowed on the backstretch and brought out the caution. In a devastating coincidence, the Ronnie Williams team car driven by Swanson met a similar fate just nine laps later with Swanson losing power coming out of turn-four, bringing out another caution.

The restart on lap 53 brought Mike Christopher Jr. into the top-3, and by lap 78, Junior moved the Tommy Baldwin #7NY into second around Goodale then took to stalking McKennedy. A lap 99 accident between Keith Rocco and Artie Pederson in turn-four gave everyone the golden opportunity to hop into the pits for fresh tires and a splash of fuel. On the restart it was Anthony Nocella with the quick-stop, Christopher Jr., Goodale, McKennedy and Bobby Santos III after his 'Free Pass' savior to keep the #44MA on the lead lap.

Christopher Jr. would lead the rest of the way in dominating fashion, turning his fastest time on lap 112. In victory lane, young Mike Christopher Jr. thanked Tommy Baldwin's team for their lightning pit-stop, saying the last 25 laps were the best he'd ran all night. Jon McKennedy was disappointed with yet another 2nd place finish in Tour-type Modifieds at Thompson but excited about the team's long run speed. Eric Goodale's 3rd place finish also mirrored McKennedy's disappointment but thanked his team's efforts, saying the trip back to Long Island wouldn't be all that bad. Anthony Nocella bounced back from early problems for 4th and Bobby Santos III hard-charged for a strong 5th place finish in the Tinio Motorsports entry.

The always thrilling Limited Sportsman started off the night's feature action with an incredible 26-car field. Following some opening lap spins, a strong three-way battle between Rhode Island's Corey Fanning and the Connecticut duo of Aaron Plemons and 'Leadfoot' Larry Barnett dominated the 25-lap event. The bouncing, floating Limited Sportsman-drivers jumped around the Thompson highbanks and, after surviving a late charge by Danielson's Troy Waterman, Fanning would cross the finish in 1st with Plemons and multi-time champion Barnett taking 2nd and 3rd.

A late addition to the line-up last week, the Mini Stocks held a sprinting, green to checkered feature. After bobbing and weaving, the #82 of Kevin Moore took the lead with just five to go and stalked by the Michalski family of Steve and Scott, in the #44 and #51 respectively, under the twin checkered flags. It would be Moore's first Thompson Speedway victory.

Another first-time victory came in the SK Lite Modifieds. Early in the 25-lap feature, it was a four-car breakaway at the front with Steven Chapman's #14, the #88 machine of Mark Bakaj, the #39 of George Bessette Jr., and John O'Sullivan in the #15. Bakaj loosened in the closing laps, nearly taking himself and O'Sullivan out in turn-four on lap 18. In the end it was Chapman in the #14 taking his first Thompson victory, yelling triumphantly, "I know how to get to victory lane finally!" Bessette Jr. and Tyler Chapman, in the second family-team car, nabbed 2nd and 3rd.

To finish the night's festivities, the Thompson ACT-type Late Models, led by Woody Pitkat in the Helliwell Motorsports entry, took the green for their 35-lap feature. From the get-go, previous winner Derek Gluchacki door-smacked Pitkat coming out of tricky turn-two and ran off with the lead. Pitkat's day would go from bad to worse, later slamming into the lap car of Charles Bailey IV on lap 26 bringing out the event's lone caution. Gluchacki would be surrounded by former champions Rick Gentes, Nick Johnson and Brian Tagg, but held on till the end. Gluchacki took down the win followed by Tagg and Johnson in 2nd and 3rd with a strong run for Mike Benevides for 4th and 2021 Late Model champion Ryan Morgan taking 5th. Results continue to be unofficial pending further technical inspection of the top-three.

Thompson Speedway will roar back to life on Wednesday, June 15th for the first of four midweek summer events at the 5/8-mile oval. The Nutmeg State 75 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series plus feature action for the Sunoco Modifieds, ACT-type Late Models, SK Lite Modifieds, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stocks. More information including times and prices will be announced in the near future.

Icebreaker Weekend Starts
83rd Thompson Season
with Shattering Success
Thompson, CT -- The annual Icebreaker weekend Saturday opener was nothing short of a shattering success for Thompson Speedway and co-promoters Tom Mayberry with the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) and Cris Michaud with the American-Canadian Tour (ACT). Growth in both the Sunoco Modified and Mini Stock divisions showcased a strong faith local drivers have in this combined venture between Michaud and Mayberry while the racing itself provided racefans with some much-needed entertainment after another New England winter. The visiting PASS Super Late Models, EXIT Realty Pro Trucks and NEMA Lites also wowed the crowd with defensive driving and plenty of highspeed thrills, with a few spills along the way.

Starting off feature racing action was the first event for the Sunoco Modifieds in 2022. The 30-lap sprint proved coming off Thompson's Turn 2 straight and true is no easy feat with all four cautions resulting from spins coming off the East corner of the track. Newton, Connecticut's Stephen Kopcik kept the lead from the initial green before Jon Puleo threw his No.7 to the bottom coming out of Turn 2. Puleo would lose the lead with another slide job move from Kopick when Stafford Speedway super star Todd Owen started pressuring the duo at the halfway point.

The final caution on lap 26 bunched up the field, leaving Kopick with a rearview mirror full of Owen and fellow standout Mike Christopher, Jr. With Christopher in second, Kopick drove on the defense as the two swapped lanes again and again in the final five laps. Coming down to the checkered flag, Christopher threw one last, desperate shot to the bottom of Turn 4 undernieth Kopick, but it was too little, too late. Stephen Kopick would claim the Sunoco Modified's Icebreaker victory with Wolcott's Christopher in second and Somers' Owen in third.

The NEMA LITES brought their usual lightning speed to the Thompson Icebreaker weekend with their 25-lap feature going green-to-checkered in under nine minutes. Danielson, Connecticut's Todd Bertrand took the gold with his No.48 while a pair of Massachusetts drivers swept the rest of the podium. Medway's Jake Trainor took second and Kyle Valeiri from Monument Beach earned third.

The only thing in DJ Shaw's windshield this afternoon was redemption. Last year's PASS Icebreaker 75 proved illusive for Shaw who had to settle for 6th following Derek Griffith's dominance of the 2021 event. Content with following pole-sitter Johnny Clark through the opening stages, Shaw laid in wait for the first 40 laps until Clark's handling faded away, the No.54 coming out of Turn 4 nearly sidewise on multiple occasions. On lap 47, Nova Scotia's Austin MacDonald, a major threat for the lead throughout his preliminary heat and the feature, slammed hard into the Turn 1 retaining wall before coming to a rest against the wall in Turn 2.

On the restart, Shaw launched like a rocket, with Clark and Jake Johnson in tow. While these three took off, the remaining top-ten cars cruised around the 5/8-mile under a blanket before veteran drivers Joey Polewarczyk and Eddie MacDonald left the party. In the remaining laps, Shaw, Johnson and MacDonald made their own lane to the finish while Polewarczyk and fellow New Hampshire driver Gabe Brown mixed it up in the final two laps with Brown on top for fourth and Polewarczyk capping the top-five.

The Thompson Mini Stocks rolled out onto the track seventeen-strong compared to just eleven during last year's Icebreaker weekend. The first caution flag flew on lap 6 with the strong-running No.31 of Tommy Silva took a dive into the frontstretch grass, just barely missing the inside retaining wall. By then, 2021 champion Jarred Roy had already taken the lead, and kept it through to the end of their first 20-lap feature of 2022. Charles Canfield would take second with Kevin Moore, recovering strong from a missed-shift restart, to finish third.

To round out the day, the EXIT Realty New England Pro Trucks launched their 2022 season with plenty of action. Early into the 35-lap feature, three trucks came together coming off the fourth corner with Tyler Chapman having to take his No.81 truck behind the wall. Following several peaceful laps, Andy Pellagrini drove off Turn 4 with a little too much throttle, spinning him backwards into the frontstretch grass and into the inside pit wall. After twenty feet of scraping atop the concrete wall, Pellagrini come to rest on top with his drivers-side tires free-floating. After the crowd received another lesson in the infamous Thompson Double Hook, Gerard Giordano, Jr. once again took the Pro Truck Icebreaker victory with Duane Knoll and Connor Souza rounding out the podium.

With weather for Sunday looking far less than favorable, the decision was made Saturday to postpone Sunday's Icebreaker 125 schedule to Saturday, April 9th. This coming Saturday the rescheduled $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 will roll alongside the Thompson ACT-type Late Models, SK Lite Modifieds and Limited Sportsman. Pits will open at 9:00am with practice to follow. Racing set to begin at 1:00pm. Specific times and other information will be released this week. Combo General Admission tickets will be honored for Saturday's rescheduled event, as will pit passes. You must keep and show your pit passes on Saturday to be honored. Five Thompson Local Divisions Ready
to Break the Ice & Kickstart the Season
Barre, VT and Naples, ME -- The five Thompson Speedway local divisions are ready to roll into the 48th Icebreaker weekend this Saturday, with optional practice on Friday. Everyone coming to the 'Big-T' is searching for glory in New England's opening event and chomping at the bit to start their year off on a high note.

Modified legend Keith Rocco leads his fellow Sunoco Modified drivers onto the track for their first feature of the year this Saturday. 'Kid Roc' will again face off against the young Mike Christopher, Jr. while perennial Thompson Sunoco Modified stars Troy Talman, Jonathan Puleo and John Lowinski-Low look to steal a little glory in the coming year. Sunoco World Series Triple Crown Champion Todd Owen is also expected to start his season at the Icebreaker and face-off with foes Rocco and Christopher, Jr for the top spot.

While 2021 Late Model Champion Ryan Morgan is ready to defend his title, Tom Carey III might be the biggest player to enter the track for Sunday's 35 lapper. 'TC III' took both the Icebreaker AND Sunoco World Series Late Model victories in 2021 and is well prepared to take his fan-favorite Brookside machine into O'Reilly Auto Parts Victory Lane once again. Both Morgan and Carey will have to face some stiff competition to maintain their 2021 momentum. Stalwarts Woody Pitkat, Brian Tagg, Rick Gentes and Mark Jenison are all expected to put on a show with ACT Late Models across New England welcome to join and open their season early.

The SK Lites are likewise prepared for another year of back-and-forth competition with Anthony Bello taking the division by storm in 2021 with two wins and three second-place finishes in five events. Bello's closest competitor, 3-time 2021 winner Paul Charette, has indicated he will not be in attendance at the Icebreaker leaving the door open for possible invaders, or allowing Bello to keep at his winning ways in 2022.

One of the most entertaining divisions, not only at Thompson but across Southern New England, the Limited Sportsman competition is poised to take down 'Leadfoot' Larry Barnett. Ryan Waterman is seeking redemption in 2022, keeping tight behind Barnett until his off-color 22nd place finish during October's Sunoco World Series kept the Danielson, Connecticut driver out of championship contention. Waterman will be joined by the rough and tumble crowd of Corey Fanning, Brent Gleason, Nicholas Hovey and Scott Sundeen in their collective pursuit of ol' Leadfoot. The Limited Sportsman are not to be missed alongside Sunday's Icebreaker 125.

The Mini Stocks will also be in tow, starting their 2022 campaign with a 20-lap feature on Saturday. 2021 Champion Jared Roy is ready to battle another season against Russell Barboza and Dave Trudeau in the six events in 2022. Being the first race of the season, it remains to be seen just how many invaders take to the 5/8-mile Thompson highbanks this Saturday.

Lastly, the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series kick-starts their 2022 campaign with the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 on Sunday. Notable drivers like Patrick Emerling, Jonathan McKenney, Ronnie Williams, Chris Pasteryak and Anthony Nocella are all entered for the opening Tour-type Modified event of the Northeast season. Aside from joining the likes of Richie Evans, Jimmy Spencer, Steve Park, Mike Stefanik, Ted Christopher AND the $10,000 grand prize, there is also an interesting provisional at stake.

A Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series provisional for the Granite Capital 100 at Barre, Vermont's Thunder Road is up for grabs to any Modified driver that takes the Icebreaker green flag, regardless of finishing position. This unique provisional means if a driver starts the Icebreaker 125 they are eligible for the Memorial Day provisional at Thunder Road. This provisional will be awarded on race day to the highest finishing Icebreaker driver who didn't qualify into the event.

Like these drivers, we at the American-Canadian Tour and Pro All Stars Series can't wait to start the New England racing season at Thompson Speedway on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd. Along with the five Thompson local divisions and the Outlaw Open Modified Icebreaker 125, the weekend will also include PASS Super Late Models, NEMA LITES and the EXIT Realty Pro Truck Series.

General Admission Combo for both Saturday and Sunday is $60 for adults with ages 12-under $20. Saturday-Only is $30 with 12-under $10 and Sunday-Only is $40 with 12-under $10. All tickets for the grandstands are now available at HAPPSNOW HERE.

Pit Admission Combo for both Saturday and Sunday is $75 for adults, 12-under is $40. Single Day Admission, either Saturday-Only or Sunday-Only, is $50 and 12-under for $30.

Mix of Youth & Veteran Modified Stars
Lining Up To Battle For $10K at Icebreaker
Story by Souza Media
BARRE, VT and NAPLES, ME - Race fans in New England are preparing for the official kick-off of the 2022 season in just under two weeks. Operated by the staff at the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) and Pro All Star Series (PASS), Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park will roar back to life for the 48th running of Icebreaker weekend, April 1-3, with nine divisions of racing.

All of the action will be headlined by the $10,000 to win Icebreaker 125 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series, but will also include championship points races for the Pro All Star Series, EXIT Realty Pro Truck Series, NEMA Lites and all five of Thompson's local divisions. With an optional practice day on Friday and qualifying and feature racing across both Saturday and Sunday, race fans won't want to miss the opener at one of Connecticut's top short-tracks.

The Outlaw Open Modified Series race is shaping up to be a bit of a battle between youth rising stars and veterans for the big check. On the veteran side, Ronnie Williams, who won multiple Outlaw Open Modified Series races at Thompson in 2021, will return to competition with car owner Gary Casella to chase the trophy. Williams is no stranger to winning at Thompson, and is also a multiple-time SK Modified champion at Stafford Motor Speedway, just across the state. Williams and Casella have been a potent combination since their first race together and will surely be a threat before the end.

Jonathan McKennedy, a longtime Modified regular, is also entered to return to Thompson for the Icebreaker. McKennedy, now a full-time driver on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, ran the Outlaw Open Modified Series events last year and was a threat to win many. However, some late-race strategy didn't quite play out his way. Strategy will once again be a factor at the Icebreaker - so only time will tell if the Middlesex Interiors team has what it takes to grab the win.

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour regular Eric Goodale and veteran Chris Pasteryak are also part of the early entry list. Both of them have plenty of laps on the high-banks of Thompson, and would love to leave with the check at the end of 125 laps.

On the youth side, a recent track champion at Thompson and an additional former SK Lite Modified winner are making the move to the big dance. Anthony Bello, who captured the SK Lite Modified track title last year, is entered to compete in the No. 19 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series. Bello took the SK Lite Modified division by surprise last year, rocketing to the front and ending the season with the championship. Bello's Tour-Type Modified experience might be a bit limited, but look for this youth talent to have a goal of finishing all the laps and trying to get to the front in the final circuits.

On the other side, rising star Teddy Hodgdon proved in February he would be a threat in the Tour-Type Modified ranks for 2022. As a former Thompson winner in the SK Lite Modifieds and former champion of the division over at Stafford, Hodgdon went to New Smyrna Speedway's World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing and finished inside the podium in the championship standings for the week. At one of the toughest tracks, in his debut Modified starts, Hodgdon competed against some of the best. Now, he's hoping to carry that confidence and momentum back to New England at the Icebreaker.

"Definitely exciting to head back to Thompson, especially with the recent history of success for our family-owned team," Hodgdon said. "Thompson is always a super fun track to run, and I can't wait to start the season up north on high note. The track is pretty tricky when you get started. It's a very line-sensitive track on where you can run, but once you find your footing it can be rewarding against the competition. I think I've grown a lot there since my first laps."

Like Bello, Hodgdon wants to finish all the laps and try to challenge those veteran competitors when the race hits the final laps.

"The goal coming from a great week down at New Smyrna is to continue to grab solid finishes and run up front," Hodgdon said. "If we can do that, we will definitely be up there when it counts most. All of us are just excited to get the race season officially started."

The Outlaw Open Modified Series teams will be allowed to practice on Friday and Saturday, but all qualifying and feature racing will take place on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Sunoco Modifieds, Pro All Star Series, EXIT Realty Trucks, Mini Stocks and NEMA Lites will qualify and race to kick-off Icebreaker weekend. Sunday, the Thompson Late Models, Limited Sportsman and SK Lite Modifieds will join the Outlaw Open Modified Series to wrap the weekend.

Following Friday's practice session, ACT and PASS officials will honor the 2021 Thompson track champions at the Clubhouse Raceway Restaurant with a banquet ceremony. Tickets for the banquet are currently on-sale with a purchase deadline of March 25. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased by filling out a short form. Fans can find the form online
HERE.

Icebreaker weekend tickets are available in a package that offers a grandstand pass for both Saturday & Sunday, or each day separately. Fans who purchase the two-day pass have a price set at $60 for adults, with children ages 12 & under just $20. Tickets for Saturday only are $30 for adults and $10 for children 12 & under, while Sunday tickets to watch the Outlaw Open Modified Series stars race for $10,000 are $40 for adults and $10 for kids 12 & under. All tickets for the grandstands are now available at HAPPSNOW HERE.

Pit passes for the weekend will also be offered in a package, but will only be sold at the track. Passes are $75 per adult for a two-day pass, with those 12 & under just $40. Pit passes for just Saturday are $50 for adults and $30 for kids 12 & under, while Sunday alone is $50 for adults and $30 for kids 12 & under. No pit passes will be sold in advance.
