DAN BOWES #25 - 2023 NESS CHAMPION
WORLD SERIES PR RACE RECAP -- Vern Romanowski and Ryan Battle led the New England Supermodified Series (NESS) to green for their 2023 championship finale. Championship chaser Dan Bowes overtook the two front row starters to steal the lead by lap two as point leader Ben Seitz also made his way around the early leaders to take chase. Matt Swanson dove in under Seitz to battle side-by-side in spectacular fashion lap after lap before Swanson finally took the position on lap 11. The lone caution flag flew on lap 24 for Dave Duggan’s spin in turn one to reshuffle the field. Dan Bowes took charge once again on the restart, schooling second-place finisher Matt Swanson with the win and passing over third-place finisher Ben Seitz to take the 2023 NESS championship.

TROAD PR RACE RECAP  - Speaking of lightning fast, the New England Supermodifed Series stole the stage for their 75-lap Milk Bowl weekend spectacular. Ryan Battle back behind the wheel of the #9 machine led from the drop of the green flag, careening around lap traffic within the first fifteen circuits around the ¼-mile Thunder Road bullring. 2023 winners Vern Romanowski and Dan Bowles kept up the pace as best they could, but quickly found themselves half-a-track back in second and third. Matt Swanson powered up through just after the halfway point to take the lead before Duggan’s powerplant let loose coming out of turn four.

Battle and Swanson restarted the field with thirty-five laps remaining as Swanson got shot out of a cannon on on the restart to take the lead from the outside lane before Dave Duggan’s spin in turn two called the caution once more. Swanson powered back up under green to take the Thunder Road win over a hard-charging Ryan Battle in just his second Supermodified start with Dan Bowles rounding out the podium.

MATT SAWNSON DOMINATES NESS SUPERMODS
WMMP PR RACE RECAP - Matt Swanson took the fast lane against Dave Duggan under the green flag in the New England Supermodified Series 50-lap trophy dash. Rob Summers immediately nabbed second from his third-place starting spot as Duggan settled in for third. After Swanson had worked up a half-track lead on Summers, mayhem ensued on lap 42 as NESS point leader Ben Seitz slid backward into the turn four wall with Danny Lane spinning to the infield. Matt Swanson would again make short work under the return to green to take the Supermodified win over Rob Summers and Dave Duggan.

Wood - Timmons - Swanson Top the
Field in the Sherm Arnold's Flooring 50
Oxford ME - Hall of Fame Driver Russ Wood came home the victor in the New England Supermodified Series Sherm Arnold's Flooring 50 Saturday, August 5th at Oxford Plains Speedway. Local hot shoe Bobby Timmons III out of Windham, ME put on a hard charge but came up a little bit short and settled for second while Massachusetts driver Matt Swanson piloted the Lane Racing number 9 to a distant third.

Wood, a winner of over well 100 Supermodified Races in his illustrious career, jumped out front early in the 50 lap contest and was able to build up a substantial lead as the high powered Big Block winged racers ripped around the 3/8 mile oval in the 13 to 14 second range. Wood normally drives his own number 41 entry, but was tapped by car owner Howie Lane to wheel the popular number 97 on this night.

As the laps ticked down, that choice would prove fruitful as the veteran driver managed his lead well over the second half of the contest. Timmons moved into the second spot just past the halfway point and Wood, sensing the chase, was able to pick up the pace over the final 10 laps and cruise home to a 2 second victory over Timmons and teammate Swanson.

The NESS tour returns to action as a part of the 50th Annual Spencer Group Paving Oxford 250 weekend with a double header races Friday and Saturday night August 25th and August 26th.

DAN BOWES THE NESS WMMP WINNER
It was Dave Duggan versus Russ Wood at the front of the New England Supermodified feature event as the Big Blocks took the green flag. Duggan would set the blistering pace up front early with Bobby Timmons in tow. Wood got the early shuffle back on the outside lane, later ending his day on lap 17. Just two laps later Duggan slid high rolling out of turn two and allowed Timmons to steal the lead. An aggressive battle for second would ensue between Duggan, Dan Bowes and Jeffrey Battle before the second and final caution for Ryan Battle's hit into the tire barrier in turn three.

Timmons and Bowes lined-up side-by-side on the restart with Timmons taking the edge but Bowes was not afraid to use the outside lane. Much in the vein of his June victory at Barre, Vermont's Thunder Road, Bowes took advantage of the outside lane banking to launch around Timmons for the lead on lap 41. With laps winding down, Jeffrey Battles would work the back bumper of Timmons, pulling up alongside under the white flag. Under the checkers, Dan Bowes would take his second NESS win of the 2023 season followed by Jeffrey Battle who just edged Bobby Timmons at the line for second.

BOWES TAKES NESS SEASON OPENER
Starting off the evening's program the New England Supermodified Series made their return to Thunder Road to kick-start the 2023 season for the open-wheeled rockets. Led to green by Dan Bowes, the field jumped into single file, setting a lightning pace with Bowes himself taking a fast-time of 9.971-seconds during the event.

Just two cautions slowed the pace with Bowes leading the field each time out. The real battle would be for second as it swapped between heavy-hitters Jon McKennedy, Anthony Nocella and Matt Swanson time and time again.

It would be Dan Bowes triumphant in victory lane after a devastating wreck at the Nation's Site of Excitement on Milk Bowl weekend in October followed by McKennedy and Swanson to round out the podium.

NESS Gears Up for a Big Year Two
Naples ME - Excitement is building in anticipation of the sophomore season for The New England Super Modified Tour (NESS) which is kicking off its steady nine race schedule at the Thunder Road Speed bowl on June 9th. With less than three weeks until opening day at the "Nations Site of Excitement", drivers are busily preparing their high powered, big winged Supermodifieds to turn sub 10 second laps around the steeply banked 1/4 mile oval in Barre Vermont.

The 2023 edition of NESS includes a pair of visits to the aforementioned Thunder Road with a second date on September 30th. Oxford Plains Speedway will dot the schedule three times with dates on July 8th, August 5th, and August 26th as a part of the 50th annual Oxford 250 weekend. White Mountain Motorsports Park has one date on July 14th and a 2nd to be confirmed on September 16th. Finally the High banked 5/8 Mile Thompson Speedway Plays host to NESS on June 21st and again on October 7th as a part of the World Series of racing.

Officials on the NESS tour have worked hard to keep the schedule compact and easy on the teams with as few conflicts as possible. NESS has also strived to create a rule book that promotes close competition, fair and equitable rules, and cost containment to reign in spiraling costs for all teams. "One of the biggest things NESS has done is cut down on travel cost," said car owner Howie Lane. "There is a lot of driver's right here in New England with Supermodifieds that just can't afford to travel to Ohio and Michigan to race. These teams are made up of guys that have to be at work Monday morning. NESS gives us a place to race without having to book hotel rooms and travel hundreds of miles."

The sentiment was echoed by Windham Maine's Bobby Timmons III. "For us, we just love Supermodified racing and have always had to travel. It's nice having a big block series that races in our back yard." said Timmons. The Timmons family has a long tradition of Supermodified racing with Timmons III being a third generation driver, and the NESS tour has given them the ability to add more races to their schedule.

The June 9th opening day at Thunder Road is shaping up to be one of the best NESS shows yet. Lane cited the smaller tracks on the NESS tour as another added safety benefit. "These smaller tracks naturally keep speeds in check and the racing close, said Lane. "Things happen very fast in a Supermodified." Lane also cited the possibility of higher car counts at the opener in Vermont. "With all the guys I have talked to, I'd say we may have 12 to 14 entries in Thunder Road including guys like Ben Seitz, Anthony Nocella, Russ Wood, and Matt Swanson. That many cars on that small track should make for some great racing."

Inaugural NESS Champion Robbie Summers #5 has also filed an entry for Thunder Road as he plans to defend his title in 2023. In addition to cost savings on travel, Summers cites other cost savings measures implemented by officials on the NESS tour. "Everything has changed so much since Covid and the cost of everything has gone up so much. NESS has made the 572 Spec motor option available which saves about 10 to 15 thousand dollars on a motor. But they have also implemented a gear rule for the open motors, and by doing that they have made them last 1 to 2 years now instead of 6 races. That's a big help."

Supermodified racing is a "different kind of racing," said Summers. Big Block engines mounted on the side of the car, giant wings atop the chassis, and huge slick tires mean speeds not commonly seen at the local short track. Typically in racing, speed means more money, and that is where NESS steps in. Said Summers, "They (NESS) have done everything in their power to make it affordable and keep it alive while bringing in new blood." Local short track aces like Derek Griffith, Nick Sweet, and Derek Ranstrom have all taken turns behind the wheel of a Supermodified, with Griffith snagging a win at Oxford last year.

The NESS tour has also implemented additional protocols like the tire program in order to help even the competition. Drivers now must chose and mount their tires at the race track on race day vs in advance. This is a regulation that helps monitor any chemical altering of tires pervious to the event, and therefore cutting down on more costs and man power.NESS president Tom Mayberry is optimistic for the coming season. "We have had a tremendous amount of interest in the off-season," said Mayberry. "We think this is on the verge of becoming something big enough to do 8 to 10 very big races every year. We are going to keep working on cost savings so we can build this thing into something special."

With the unique appearance of a Supermodified, the high speeds, and a crop of new drivers and wily veterans, the NESS tour is poised to launch to the next level in 2023.
