Rowe
Steals Clarks Thunder at Unity |
Ben
Rowe played the waiting game in Saturday nights Pro All Stars Series150 lapper at
Unity Raceway and his patience paid off. Rowe took advantage of an opening on the bottom
on the final lap to steal away the lead from 2002 PASS Rookie of the Year Johnny Clark to
earn the victory by a margin of less than six inches (.024 seconds) in the closest feature
race finish in Pro All Stars Series racing history.
Clark had dominated the night, earning the fast time in Sunoco Race
Fuels Time Trials with a lap of 14.648 seconds. Luck was on his side for the dash redraw
when he pulled the number one spot and led wire to wire to put his DNK Select Used Cars
Monte Carlo on the pole for the feature. Clark took the lead from the green and showed
signs of dominance early on, building up a half-straightaway lead on his challengers. Dave
Gorveatt kept the pressure on in the early going, and Louie Mechalides later took up the
challenge, slipping under Gorveatt on the events first restart at lap 52. Mike Rowe
was next to take on Clark, charging past both Gorveatt and Mechalides to run second and
slowly peck away at Clarks substantial lead. Meanwhile, Ben Rowe had worked his Mechanical
Services/Superior Image double zero up to third at lap 100 from an uncharacteristic 11th
starting position. Rowe took advantage of a rare restart on lap 125 to put the move on his
dad and take over the second spot, setting his sights on Clark. Clark was up to the
challenge though as he controlled the pace and maintained his lead with Ben Rowe, Mike
Rowe, Sam Sessions, Chubbuck, Dale Shaw and Doug Averill hot on his heels. On the
events final restart Clark offered up an opening on the bottom and Rowe took
advantage, powering up under Clark and edging forward ever so slowly.
On the final lap the pair battled door to door off of turn four rubbing fenders,
tires, and body panels down to the stripe and sailing off the race track in turn one after
both drivers gave it their all come home victorious. Rowe led the lap that counted for his
first PASS victory of the young season. Clark led every lap but the last for second with
Mike Rowe third, Scott Chubbuck fourth and Doug Averill fifth. Dave Gorveatt, Sam
Sessions, Dale Shaw, Larry Gelinas and Gary Smith rounded out the top ten. Ben Rowe and
Scott Chubbuck each captured heat race wins, and Joe Squeglia earned Northern Race Tires
Rookie of the Race honors for his fifteenth place finish.
The Pro All Stars Series travels to Canaan Fair Speedway on Route 118 in Canaan New
Hampshire next Sunday afternoon when Shaker Valley Auto Sales of Enfield presents the Pro
All Stars Series 150. Sunoco Race Fuels Time Trials get underway at 1 PM. For more
